During their travels around the world in their twenties and thirties, Johanna and Christey witnessed a lot of poverty. The pair, both of whom have a background in international development, decided the most effective way of fighting poverty was to help fund the inspiring community organisations they came across, all of which had a clear and in-depth understanding of the problems but lacked money and publicity. JUST PEOPLES work in partnership with a diverse group of aid organisations in both Africa and Asia, enabling each organisation to effectively make a difference in their own way.
The Southwood team find great joy in having a sense of community and giving to others. With our curated events, skills and the community around us, we have the ability to reach out and make changes for the better. After a lot of research, we chose to support JUST PEOPLES as they are incredibly effective at enabling a wide scope of aid organisations to develop and flourish. Their team celebrate the relationship between every single supporter and community organisation, bridging the gap between people who happened to be born in very different parts of the world. They work on a zero commission basis, which means apart from a very small third-party transfer fee, all of the money goes straight to the chosen cause.
JUST PEOPLES have numerous active projects. We are very excited to announce our on-going support of a project driven by an incredible Cambodian woman called Srey Mao. Every day Srey dishes out nutritious meals and vitamins to kids at a free school in the slums in Siem Riep, Cambodia. Srey Mao has seen 3 brothers and 1 sister die of starvation under the brutal regime of Pol Pot. She is determined to give the children of Cambodia the nutrition they need to be happy, grow and focus on their education. There have been significant improvements in both the mental and physical health of the children she provides lunches to. Srey has been through a lot of trauma, yet always effervescent and kind, character her a figure of resilience and kindness to all that know her. Her lunches are fresh, nutritious and cost-effective - $1200 will pay for one year's worth of lunch for 20 children!
We invite you to join in the Christmas spirit of giving for an evening event where the change-makers behind JUST PEOPLES will chat to the Southwood community and makers about their story, projects and ways to make positive changes. You can roam our showroom with wine and cheese and be treated to 15% off all homewares and gifts, knowing 5% of all funds made on the night will be donated to Srey’s kitchen. The event is completely free, just grab your tickets HERE!
