How to Create a Healthy Living Room

How to Create a Healthy Living Room

Creating a healthy home starts with asking lots of questions. If you don’t ask you will probably never know exactly what has gone into a particular product. When products are made with natural fibres using traditional techniques all the answers you get should be short and sweet.

There are so many synthetic materials and finishes that have crept into our living rooms that we may not think to question. These products promise to make our lives more convenient, but sadly many are being shown to have a detrimental impact on our health.

Many furniture and homewares companies focus only on aesthetics but are not aware of the value of using all natural materials, or the dangers of bringing synthetic materials and chemicals into our homes.

  1. Your sofa or arm chair

There is a huge misconception that upholstery needs fabric stain protection and fire retardants to be fit for purpose in a modern world. This couldn’t be further from the truth if you select the right natural fibre.

Selecting linen, wool and hemp fabrics for upholstery is a great way to avoid the need for these toxic chemicals, which can stay in your system for up to 40 years following one exposure.

Natural fibres are naturally resistant to stains and respond well to simple cleaning solutions like water and apple cider vinegar.

  1. Rugs

In the modern home the floor in the living room is often a place for play, rest and relaxation. Children in particular can spend hours playing on the floor making it important to select a fibre that is soft, safe and durable.

Hemp and wool make a fantastic choice. All of Armadillo&Co’s rugs are made from 100% natural fibres, and their extensive collection makes it easy to find the perfect rug for any home.

  1. Cushions and throws

There is a natural fibre for every season, whether you are after light cotton throws in summer or cosy merino and angora for winter.

Where possible look for cushions and throws that are machine or hand washable to avoid the need for regular dry cleaning. This is not only more convenient but also better for you and  the environment.

  1. Accessories

Accessories are often the finishing touch of a home. They are often small items we fall in love with so we don’t give them the same scrutiny as we do furniture or rugs. It’s still important to consider the materials and finishes that go into these items, and wherever possible minimise synthetic materials and finishes.

  1. Storage

Opt for hemp, jute, cotton or felted baskets over plastic tubs. Soft sided baskets are perfect for children’s toys as they are light and have no hard edges, making them safe and easy to use by even the smallest hands. Soft baskets are also less likely to damage other items of furniture or your timber floor.
